Rays 8, Orioles 1: At Baltimore, Andy Sonnanstine allowed one run in eight innings, Erik Hinske homered and Tampa Bay completed the first winning April in franchise history by beating the Orioles. Sonnanstine (4-1) gave up six hits, walked two and had a season-high five strikeouts in winning his third straight start. He became the first Tampa Bay pitcher to win four games in April and tied the team record for wins in any month.
Angels 6, Athletics 1: At Anaheim, Calif., Ervin Santana remained unbeaten in six starts, Casey Kotchman drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and Los Angeles beat Oakland. Santana is 8-1 lifetime against Oakland and has allowed only one earned run in his last 30 innings against the A’s.
Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1: At Boston, Manny Ramirez slid in just ahead of the tag on Jason Varitek’s single in the ninth, giving the Red Sox their second straight win over Toronto in their last at-bat.
Rangers 11, Royals 9: At Arlington, Texas, Josh Hamilton hit his first career grand slam and Texas hit five home runs to beat Kansas City. David DeJesus homered and drove in three runs for the Royals, who trailed 9-1 at one point.
Twins 4, White Sox 3: At Minneapolis, Justin Morneau came through with yet another clutch hit, knocking in Carlos Gomez for the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to carry Minnesota past Chicago.
Tigers 6, Yankees 2: At New York, Placido Polanco homered twice and Marcus Thames also went deep to help Detroit beat the Yankees in New York’s first game with Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list. The Tigers have won seven of their last nine games.
