In brief: Libraries offering free comic books

The Spokesman-Review

The Friends of the Coeur d’Alene Library is sponsoring the sixth annual Free Comic Book Day on Friday and Saturday, an event held by publishers and retailers around the world to encourage children to read.

The Wallace Public Library will give comics away on Friday, from noon to 5:30 p.m.

Kootenai-Shoshone Area Libraries in Hayden, Athol, Harrison, Pinehurst, Rathdrum, Spirit Lake and the Bookmobile will distribute the free comic books on Saturday. At the Hayden Library, the comics will be given away from 2 to 5 p.m.

The Coeur d’Alene Public Library will give comics away on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Seagrave Children’s Library on the Parkside Level or at the Research and Information Desk on the upstairs on the Terrace Level. The comic books are available as long as the supply lasts.

Free Comic Book Day got its start when a comic book store owner in California named Joe Field came up with the idea in 2001. He proposed it to his fellow store owners and to the others in the industry. Everyone thought it was a great idea, and soon a committee was formed to make it happen.
