Vandals’ Lumbala No. 9 in CFL draft

Rolly Lumbala, a native of Libreville, Gabon, but a graduate of St. Francis High School at Calgary, Alberta, was the ninth player chosen in the Canadian Football League draft.

The British Columbia Lions grabbed the Vandals’ running back/tight end in the first pick of the second round.

Lumbala, along with teammate linebacker Brandon Ogletree, already has a tryout with the NFL Miami Dolphins.

GU men to play in loaded tourney

Gonzaga is one of eight teams in the prestigious 2008 Old Spice Classic men’s tournament Nov. 27-30 near Orlando, Fla. The field was finalized earlier this week with Georgetown replacing Memphis. The remaining six are Maryland, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Wichita State and Siena.

Pairings haven’t been announced. All games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.

Gonzaga, Georgetown, Michigan State, Tennessee and Siena played in the NCAA tournament last season. Maryland and Oklahoma State participated in the NIT.

Chiefs pick 21st in today’s draft

The Western Hockey League Bantam Draft is today in Calgary, Alberta, where the Spokane Chiefs will have the 21st pick in the first round.

The Bantam Draft is the first step identifying the top-rated 1993-born prospects as WHL teams pick players from this age group to add to their 50-player protected list.

The Red Deer Rebels won the draft lottery and will have the first selection overall in the draft. The Portland Winter Hawks, based on their position in the overall regular-season standings, will pick second.

The draft results will be posted live on www.whl.ca.
