Crosby-less Penguins romp

Ty Conklin beat Buffalo for the fourth time this season and the Pittsburgh Penguins withstood Sidney Crosby’s ankle injury flare-up for a 7-3 victory over the Sabres on Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

Tyler Kennedy scored his first goal in 17 games during a three-point night, Chris Minard netted the first goal of his 10-game NHL career, and Evgeni Malkin put in his 39th of the campaign during the Penguins’ highest-scoring game this season.

Crosby, who had played three games since missing 21, had recurring pain and did not play.

Panthers 4, Islanders 2: At Sunrise, Fla., defenseman Karlis Skrastins broke a tie with 8:42 left to lead Florida over New York for their fifth straight victory.

Capitals 3, Flames 2: At Washington, Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 55th and 56th goals, including the tiebreaker with 1:54 left, and Olie Kolzig earned his 300th win as the Capitals topped Calgary.

Maple Leafs 3, Flyers 2: At Philadelphia, Pavel Kubina scored his second straight game-winning goal to lift Toronto past the Flyers for the second straight night.

Ducks 4, Canucks 1: Travis Moen scored his first NHL short-handed goal, Doug Weight connected for a power-play tally, and Anaheim broke a club record with its eighth straight home victory, beating Vancouver.

Hurricanes 3, Blackhawks 0: At Chicago, Cam Ward made 25 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, and Eric Staal had a goal and two assists to lead Carolina over the Blackhawks for their fifth straight victory.

Pittsburgh will open the 2008-09 season with two games against Ottawa in Stockholm, Sweden. … Buffalo’s Andrew Peters was suspended by the NHL for one game without pay for a confrontation from the bench with the New York Rangers’ Colton Orr. … Dallas’ Steve Ott was suspended three games without pay because of a hit to the head of Colorado defenseman Jordan Leopold on Sunday. … Chicago’s James Wisniewski was suspended for one game without pay for cross-checking Detroit’s Mikael Samuelsson in the neck area on Monday.
