Chris Becker, a North Idaho College graphic design student, designed NIC’s 75th anniversary logo, which will be used during the 2008-09 academic year.

Community events will be held during the anniversary celebration, including the release of “The Gathering Place: A History of North Idaho College.”

American Title Concert series starts Thursday

The Coeur d’Alene Arts and Culture Alliance will hold its first American Title Concert series, beginning Thursday. The family concerts will be held every Thursday through Aug. 28, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Riverstone City Park amphitheater.

Concerts to enjoy include: the 25th Army Band, a variety show and concert band, playing Thursday. On July 10, the dance band, Coeur d’Alene Big Band will perform; folk band Kathy Colton and the Reluctants will be playing on July 17; blues musician Joliene Felice will perform on July 24; on July 31 Jazz Northwest will be performing; the Lake City String Quartet, an orchestra group will play on Aug. 7; families will enjoy MotorBoat, a band playing rock hits from yesterday and today on Aug. 14; country singer Ryan Larsen will entertain the Riverstone audience on Aug. 21; and the concert series will end on Aug. 28 with blues band The Culprits.

La Muse gallery featuring artist Bonnie Cooper

La Muse Galerie d’Art, at 413 1/2 E. Sherman Ave., will feature guest artist Bonnie Cooper for the month of July.

Cooper will introduce her newest line of jewelry art, “Dancing Waters,” along with a poem, by the same name.

She is a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, Calif., New Approach School for Jewelers in Virginia Beach, Va., and the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, where she received professional goldsmithing, gemological and jewelry design training. Cooper also has a degree in English and Communications from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York.

Her work can also be seen at ArtWalk, on July 11 at a champagne reception, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Pharmacy program application deadline changed

North Idaho College is extending the application deadline for the pharmacy technology program for fall 2008. The deadline, originally June 2, has been extended to Aug. 18.

The 11-month program prepares graduates to work under the supervision of licensed and registered pharmacists in retail and institutional pharmacy settings.

Contact the Health Professions and Nursing Division at 676-7132 or pick up a packet in the Health Professions and Nursing Office, located in Meyer Health and Sciences Building or the Admissions Office in Lee-Kildow Hall to apply to the program.

CYT taking applications

Christian Youth Theatre - North Idaho is currently taking applications for theater summer youth camps, July 7 through Aug. 1. The five-week camps, for ages 5 to 18, will be held at the auditorium at Coeur d’Alene High School, 5530 N. Fourth St.

Camps are age-appropriate and include drama, voice, dance and specialty workshops. Camps for ages 5 to 13 will perform highlights from “Peter Pan” and teenagers will perform a medley of Broadway tunes in “Hats Off to Broadway.”

NIC chooses new coordinator

Mary Gustafik of Sagle was recently named the new coordinator of the North Idaho College Ponderay Center in Ponderay. She will begin her new position on July 19, following the retirement of Edie McCormick after 18 years with NIC, including eight spent heading the outreach center.

She is a licensed professional counselor and has been a therapist and psychosocial rehabilitation specialist at A New Hope Social Services in Sandpoint. At New Hope, she provided individual counseling to adults as well as in-home and community-based skill training for adults and children with mental illnesses.

She has worked as an adviser for NIC’s Educational Opportunity Center, from 2005 to 2007. The program focused on assisting adult residents of Idaho’s five northern counties in enrolling in postsecondary education.

Gustafik is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and has a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Idaho.

Legion Post 69 members dispose of flags

On June 21, flags that were no longer suitable to be displayed were retired by members of American Legion Post 69. Adjutant John Wheaton commanded the retirement.

The flags were disposed of in a manner showing honor and appreciation of the American flag. Chaplin Joe Bloomsberg, read the Flag Day Prayer. As part of the ceremony, the flags were examined by Sergeant-at-Arms, Tom Weatherwax and found to be ready for retirement. Inspectors George Bloomsberg and Wheaton also examined the flags and recommended they no longer be displayed.

The unit stood at attention while Call to Colors was played. Taps also was played with the unit at attention and then they rendered a final salute to the retired colors.

Flags should no longer be used if they are damaged or excessively worn.
