Stanley Cup ratings double

Television ratings for the decisive game of the Stanley Cup finals were double the last Game 6 in 2006.

Detroit’s 3-2 victory Wednesday over Pittsburgh drew a 4.4 overnight rating and a 7 share on NBC, the network said Thursday. The Game 6 between Edmonton and Carolina two years ago earned a 2.2.

Mead wins 4A Scholastic Cup

Mead was the Class 4A winner of this year’s Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Wells Fargo Bank Scholastic Cup championship.

The competition is a year-long program based on a combination of exellence in academics, sportsmanship and athletic performance. Points are awarded based on participation and finish in state championship tournaments and top-eight finishes in WIAA Academic State Championship categories.

St. George’s in 2B and Odessa in 1A were other classification winners this year.

Mead scored 1,140 points to beat Kentridge (1,065) and Ferris (1,025) for the honor.

St. George’s scored 1,075 points to finish ahead of Evergreen Lutheran (915) and Northwest Christian 99-5). Davenport finished fifth.

Area 1B teams finished first through third. Odessa scored 1,010 points, Garfield-Palouse 900 and Tekoa-Oakesdale 625.

Local spring academic state champions included University and Cheney in baseball; Ferris and Garfield-Palouse in softball; Northwest Christian in boys and girls golf; Odessa in boys track; Mead and Liberty in girls track; Clarkston in boys tennis; Freeman and St. George’s in girls tennis; and Pullman in boys soccer.
