Treanor’s loyalty divided

From wire reports

SAN FRANCISCO – Matt Treanor doesn’t know whether or not he’ll be in the starting lineup for the Marlins Wednesday when they face the Giants. But he’s certain of one thing: He’ll be on pins and needles wondering how his wife is faring in the Olympics.

Misty May-Treanor and her partner, Kerri Walsh, will be playing for the gold medal in beach volleyball at precisely the same time the Marlins are battling the Giants – an unfortunate case of lousy timing for Treanor.

“As much as I want to see it, I have a responsibility to my team and the guys on the field,” said Treanor, who will try to remain focused on baseball while his wife tries to defend the gold medal she and Walsh won four years ago in Athens.

Treanor has managed to work around the scheduling conflicts up to now, receiving updates on his wife’s matches from teammates and – during home games at Dolphin Stadium – police officers who slip him the scores from time to time.

After the Marlins arrived in San Francisco on Monday, Treanor watched a replay of his wife’s semifinal victory over Brazil as she provided commentary on the match in a phone call.

He’s not sure how he’ll keep informed Wednesday night when the Marlins are on the field at AT&T Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on the West Coast, about 45 minutes before his wife’s gold medal match against China is set to begin.

Treanor said he is more nervous watching Misty play than he ever gets when he’s playing baseball.

Phelps is Grrrreat!

Move over Tony the Tiger, here comes Olympic champion Michael Phelps.

The record-setting swimmer will soon be appearing on boxes of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes.

Kellogg Co. made the announcement Tuesday at its headquarters in Battle Creek, Mich. The winner of eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics will be featured on Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes boxes expected to be in stores by mid-September.

Battle Creek-based Kellogg says the images of Phelps that will be used will highlight some of the most memorable moments of the games.

Surgery for Jackson

Australian and WNBA star Lauren Jackson will undergo surgery on a nagging right ankle injury after the Olympics are over.

A statement released by the Australia Olympic Committee said Jackson has an impingement at the front of her right ankle joint. She has required repeated injections to compete in Beijing and will have arthroscopic surgery in Sydney next week.

The Australians are scheduled to play China in the Olympic semifinals on Thursday night.

The surgery likely will force Jackson to miss the rest of the WNBA regular season with the Seattle Storm.
