Ochoa leads Sorenstam by one shot at Open

Defending champion Lorena Ochoa shot a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Annika Sorenstam in the Canadian Women’s Open.

Ochoa hit all 18 greens in regulation and was in the rough only once on the Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club course.

Wendy Ward of Edwall, Wash., shot a 71. Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum shot a 74.

•Bob Heintz and rookie Martin Laird matched the course record with 7-under 63s at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., to share the lead after the first round of the Wyndham Championship, the PGA Tour’s last event before the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

•Defending champion Mark McNulty shot a 5-under 67 for a share of the first-round lead in the JELD-WEN Tradition at Sunriver, Ore., the fourth of the Champions Tour’s five major tournaments.

Artest deal completed

Houston completed a five-player trade with Sacramento that brought Ron Artest, forward Patrick Ewing Jr. and guard Sean Singletary in exchange for guard Bobby Jackson, rookie forward Donte Greene and Houston’s first-round pick next year. The trade was first reported July 29 but couldn’t be announced until Thursday because Greene had to spend 30 days with the Rockets after signing with them July 15.

•The wife of Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal said the couple’s marriage is on the mend. Shaunie O’Neal said she and her husband plan to put a stop their divorce proceedings before leaving Florida next week.

•The Portland Trail Blazers said guard Brandon Roy had successful knee surgery and will be ready to play when the Blazers open the season.

Mauk files lawsuit

Quarterback Ben Mauk filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the NCAA, less than a week after the association rejected his final appeal for another year of eligibility at Cincinnati.

•The Southeastern Conference has agreed to a 15-year contract extension with CBS Sports to broadcast football and basketball games.

Murder suspect caught

A Las Vegas man suspected of fatally shooting a former Olympic boxer who was struggling to jump-start his flagging career was arrested Wednesday near the Nevada-Arizona border, police said.

Arizona troopers arrested Roger Randolph, 26, during a traffic stop. Rhoshii Wells, 31, died after he was shot twice in the torso Monday outside his apartment in Las Vegas.

•Kasey Keller, the former U.S. star goalkeeper, signed with Seattle Sounders FC for its inaugural Major League Soccer season in 2009.

•The NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers signed coach John Stevens to a two-year contract extension.
