Ibanez, Washburn stay put
Raul Ibanez and Jarrod Washburn are staying put, for now, at least.
The Mariners tried unsuccessfully to make deals involving both players Thursday.
Multiple teams claimed Ibanez on revocable waivers this week, with the Detroit Tigers winning out because they had the worst record of the teams that claimed the outfielder. But the Mariners wanted top prospects back in a trade and could not reach a deal with Detroit.
Washburn had been claimed by Minnesota, with the Twins hoping to move one of their other starters into an eighth-inning relief role.
But the teams could not reach a deal when the Mariners asked for a player on the team’s current roster, as well as having Minnesota pay Washburn’s remaining $13 million in salary owed through 2009.
Both Ibanez and Washburn were pulled back off waivers and remain with the team, which opens a series tonight at Minnesota.
If the Mariners are willing to let Washburn go just to have another team take on his remaining salary through next season, they could place him on waivers again.
If a player is placed on waivers a second time, his team would not have the option of pulling him off waivers. A team that claims a player placed on waivers a second time gets the player for a $50,000 fee.
If a player placed on irrevocable waivers is not claimed, he “clears” waivers and can be traded to any team.

Lake sockeye fishing to end
Sockeye salmon fishing on Lake Wenatchee will close one hour after sunset today.
By then, the catch will be close to total that can be taken while maintaining sufficient sockeye for natural spawning, said Jeff Korth, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) north central region fish program manager.
