Cowen, Canada make final
Team Canada, with Spokane Chiefs defenseman Jared Cowen and coached by former Chiefs coach Bill Peters, defeated Slovakia 9-1 on Thursday to advance to Saturday’s title game of the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Piestany, Slovakia.
•Spokane’s Tyler Johnson, the MVP of the Western Hockey League finals, will attend the Phoenix Coyotes’ rookie camp on Sept. 16-17.
•The Chiefs’ fall camp will run Aug. 21-24 at the Arena. The sessions are free and open to the public.

Gonzaga’s men’s and women’s teams have been selected to finish sixth in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches’ poll.
GU’s men, who lost 10 seniors and seven starters off a 9-7-4 team, received 12 points in the poll. Santa Clara is the top choice, with six first-place votes and 36 points.
GU’s women picked up 22 points and return 17 players from last year’s 12-7-1 team. Portland, which advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight last year, is predicted to finish first, with seven first-place votes and 49 points.
