For Kendal Davis, giving is part of living

As soon as Kendal Davis began getting an allowance in the second grade, she began giving it away.

Guided by her parents, Tom and Hannah Davis, she allotted 10 percent of her earnings to charity. Now an eighth-grader, 13-year-old Davis finds it only natural to give. “I think it’s important to be more involved in the feelings of others and what I can do for them rather than myself.”

Last fall, Davis took a tour of Hospice House in Spokane and noticed a need for items in the children’s activity room. She saved money for three months and presented the house with $130 worth of books, puzzles and games. “Think about others and the little things you can do to better their lives,” she urged. “Many people aren’t as fortunate as you are.”

Davis, along with her parents, also volunteers for several groups in the community including Wyldlife, a middle school component of Young Life. Davis is also in leadership this year at Evergreen Middle School, where she hopes to set a good example for other kids while maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average.

Davis enjoys jazz and tap dancing, playing guitar, cooking, baking and making up smoothie recipes. “We go through the motors of our blenders pretty quickly,” Hannah Davis said. “Just recently we bought a more expensive one.”

Almost daily, Davis blends up creamy concoctions for her parents and younger siblings Abby and Sam. Every now and then she makes dinner and, after taking a cake-decorating class, has become quite good at beautifying the celebratory staple.

Though Davis isn’t exactly sure what her future holds, she is considering a profession as a chef or baker, and missionary work is on the horizon. Whatever she does, it is sure to better the lives of others.
