In brief: Century Bike Ride signup under way

The 15th annual Lilac Century Bike Ride will be held April 27 at Spokane Falls Community College.

Four courses are available: a 15- or 25-mile family ride; a 50-mile ride; and a 100-mile ride. The ride is for everyone, at every skill level.

The event is sponsored by The Aurora Northwest Rotary Club and funds raised from the ride help build Spokane parks, assist single parents and children, support student programs at local high schools, children at risk, bicycle safety programs, and more.

Cheney

3-on-3 signup under way

Cheney Parks and Recreation is taking registrations for its Mayfest Outdoor 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament scheduled May 9 and 10 in Cheney.

Registrations will be accepted through April 26.

All courts will have officials, and the tournament is set up in a double elimination format. All players get a T-shirt.

EWU plans International Week

Eastern Washington University will host its inaugural International Week May 12-17, on the Cheney campus. The weeklong celebration is anchored around the two-day Creative Works and Research Symposiumon May 14-15.

The opening ceremony for International Week will be at 11:30 a.m. on May 12 in the JFK Library. It will begin with an international flag procession followed by a welcome address by EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo.

During the week, activities will include an international dinner at the PUB, a study abroad fair, an international film, musical performances and a multicultural festival.

‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ onstage

StageWest Community Theatre will present “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” Friday through May 4 in the Cheney City Hall Auditorium, 609 Second St.

The show, which wraps up the theater’s season, is by Dale Wasserman, which was adapted from the novel by Ken Kesey.

Opening night is a dinner theater at 7 p.m. There are also dinner shows April 25 and 26, both at 7 p.m.

The dinner menu includes lasagna, garlic bread, steamed vegetables, beverages and desserts.

Tickets for the dinner theater are $20 each.

There will be matinees, without dinner, this Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 3, and April 27 at 3, May 3 at 7:30 and May 4 at 3. Tickets for these shows are $10 each.

The play stars Phil West as McMurphy and Lee Simon as Nurse Ratchet.

Tickets are available in Cheney at Bicycle Time, Owl Pharmacy and Copy Junction.

In Medical Lake, tickets are available at Owl Pharmacy.

Freeman

School tours, car wash planned

The Freeman School District is planning a series of open houses in conjunction with a planned $19.5 million capital improvement bond on the May 20 ballot. The measure would pay to renovate and expand the existing elementary and high school buildings and make safety improvements.

District Superintendent Sergio Hernandez will lead tours of the schools from 2 to 3:30 p.m. today and next Thursday. A tour and car wash will be held Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m., with musical performances by students. The schools are at Highway 27 and Jackson Road.

Home show begins Friday

The Spokane Home Builders Association will hold the ninth annual Home Improvement Show Friday through Sunday at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center.

Tea, fashion gala tickets available

Participants are asked to bring their favorite tea cup at the RiversEdge Chorus of Sweet Adelines International second annual Spring Tea and Fashion Show May 3 at St. Thomas More Parish, 8112 N. Howard Drive. It starts at noon.

The event is an afternoon of tea, refreshments, entertainment and a fashion show from Chico’s. Wear your favorite hat for a chance to win the prettiest hat contest.
