Taff keys Ferris win
Ferris’ Jesse Taff was opposite a familiar face when he lined up for a sudden-death attempt in Wednesday’s soccer shootout between his unbeaten Saxons and fellow South Hill title contender Lewis and Clark.
Players from both teams had previously missed five straight tries.
But Taff’s shot proved true for a 1-0 victory that kept Ferris atop the Greater Spokane League.
“Side netting,” said Taff. “You’ve just got to put it in the corner and don’t overpower it. Plus, he (LC goalkeeper Chris Hollman) used to play on this team, so he knows where I went. I just went the other way.”
Neither team could capitalize on much during 80 scoreless regulation and 10 overtime minutes. LC (4-2 in league, 12 points) peppered Saxons keeper Nick Stebbins early to no avail and Ferris (6-0, 16) had its opportunities late against Hollman, but even in a crowd he turned them away.
When it came down to 1-on-1 penalty kicks, both the Tigers and Saxons converted their first three before things went awry. Stebbins smothered one shot and made diving stops to his right for two other saves.
“I haven’t seen the standings, but I don’t think there are any other teams undefeated,” said Saxons coach Robin Crain.
There aren’t. With the shootout win, its second in league, Ferris holds a three-point lead over Mead and Central Valley.
