Man assessing school safety guilty of indecent exposure, fired

BOISE – Idaho public education chief Tom Luna on Friday fired a contractor who had been assessing the safety of schools across the state, after finding out he’d pleaded guilty to indecent exposure in Idaho Falls earlier this year.

The state discontinued its contract with Doug Melvin, the president of DACC Associates in Boise.

This year, the Idaho Legislature set aside $150,000 for its “Safe and Secure School Assessment.”

Melvin won the contract in August.

Luna says his agency was shocked to discover Melvin had pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor.

Before his arrest, Melvin was the Department of Homeland Security’s Idaho director.

Education Department spokeswoman Melissa McGrath says Luna’s agency has a new policy of doing criminal background checks before awarding contracts.

Melvin couldn’t be reached for comment.
