Hints from Heloise

Dear Heloise: Many times after I’ve left the house, I wonder if I remembered to shut off the electrical appliances that I used that morning, so I developed a system to help. Right before pouring the last cup of coffee, I turn off the coffee maker; before pressing the last seam, I unplug the iron; before curling the last strand of hair, I unplug the curling iron or hot rollers, etc.

I also back the car out of the garage, press the button on the remote to shut the garage door and then wait while I fasten my seat belt, tune the car radio, etc. I watch the door go down and then wait a few seconds before leaving. That way, I know I haven’t left the garage door open and the door hasn’t gone down and right back up again, which can happen occasionally. – Debbie Carlson, Omaha, Neb.
