Prep roundup: Moses Lake eliminates Ferris
Moses Lake High broke out to an early lead and held on to defeat Ferris 4-3 Tuesday in a 4A baseball regional qualifying game at Gonzaga Prep.
The Chiefs (14-11) scored an unearned run in the second off junior right-hander Bud Kittredge, making his third start in a week, added a single run in the third and two more unearned runs in the fourth. The Saxons (14-11), the second seed from District 8, committed five errors.
After C.J. Haney singled in a run in the bottom of the fourth and Evan Ewing and Haney each added RBIs in the fifth, Moses Lake led by one. But a Ferris rally came up short.
The Chiefs advance to meet GSL No. 1 seed University (15-7) at 10 a.m. Saturday in Richland.
Softball
Jenny Harlow hit a two-out, game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the eighth, giving Brewster an 8-7 win over Freeman (13-9) in the District 7 1A pigtail game at Lake Roosevelt High in Coulee Dam. With the win, the Bears claim the last spot in the regional playoffs. The Scotties’ season is over.
“Rachel Witthuhn three a complete-game two-hitter, leading Garfield-Palouse to a 3-2 win over Liberty Christian in a District 9 1B playoff game. With the win, the Vikings advance to play Colton in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday in Kennewick. Colton won two of the three meetings against Garfield-Palouse this year. … Elsewhere, LaCrosse-Washtucna scored seven runs in both the first and second innings and routed Tri-Cities Prep 23-4 in five innings. Carla Koller picked up the win for the Tigercats after pitching the complete game. LaCrosse-Washtucna advances to play Touchet, which routed St. John-Endicott 25-1, at 10 a.m. Saturday in Kennewick for a chance to play in the state tournament. Tri-Cities Prep and SJE will play at 10 a.m. in a loser-out game.
“Lindsay Crockett went 2 for 3 and drove in three runs, leading Northport to a 9-5 win over St. Michael’s in a District 7 1B playoff game. Tyleah Hargrave earned the win for the Mustangs, who will advance to play Inchelium in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Odessa.
“Dayton beat Tekoa-Oakesdale 7-5 and eliminated the Nighthawks from the District 9 2B tournament. Shelby Puckett homered and drove in three runs to lead the Nighthawks.
Boys golf
Lakeside’s Aaron Filion earned medalist honors after shooting a 78 and leading the Eagles to a first-place finish at the District 6/7 1A regional tournament at the par-72 Chewelah Golf & Country Club. Dylan Maine of Freeman took second, guiding the Scotties to a second-place finish. Chelan placed third while Colfax was fourth. The top 22 individuals advance to the state tournament, which starts Tuesday at the North Bellingham Golf Course.
Girls golf
East Valley’s Ashley Saffle qualified for the state tournament after placing third with a two-day total of 163 at the 3A regional tournament at the par-72 Horn Rapids Golf Course in Richland. Mt. Spokane’s Alyssa Osterback placed fourth with a 175.
“Chelan’s Kelli Bowers earned medalist honors after shooting an 80, but Chewelah took placed first at the District 6/7 1A regional tournament at the par-72 Chewelah Golf & Country Club. Gracie Schory shot an 83 and Kelsey Harting finished with a 98 and placed first and second, respectively, to lead the Cougars.
