Educators recognized for excellence

Spokane Public Schools has named its distinguished educators for the 2006-2007 school year.

The third-grade team at Balboa Elementary School was honored for its commitment to collaboration and professional development.

The team includes librarian Lee Fowler, teachers Krista Juul and Jeff Brantner, and Natalie Poulson, the school’s resource room teacher.

The district also honored the Garfield Elementary School Action Research Team for Comprehensive Literacy.

Members of the team include Tonya Leija, the literacy instructional coach; Gloria Sawhill, special education teacher; Michelle Barbour, Reading Recovery teacher; and teachers Heather Sutherland, Julie Standiford and Trish Campbell.

Along with educators, Spokane Public Schools also honored distinguished classified employees.

This year’s recipients are Penny Sproul, office manager at Roosevelt Elementary School; Sheri Webber, kitchen manager at Glover Middle School; Ken Savitz, project manager for the Capital Projects Team; and Sheri Murphy, sign language interpreter at Linwood Elementary School.

Shadle fundraiser

The Shadle Park High School Grad Night parent group is sponsoring a night at the Spokane Civic Theatre to help raise funds for the annual senior event.

Tickets for the presentation of the “Sound of Music,” scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the theater, 1020 N. Howard St., will be sold for $25. All proceeds from the show will benefit the Shadle Park Class of 2007 Grad Night event.

NWC student night

Northwest Christian High School students will present their work at “Humanities Night – One Million Connections” Wednesday at the school.

The event begins at 6 p.m. in the activity center on the private school’s Colbert campus, 5104 E. Bernhill Road.

Students will present everything from theatre demonstrations and fine arts projects at the event, themed “Thinking Beyond the Box.”

Live stage performances will include selections from the NWC spring musical “Cinderella; scenes from “Servant of Two Masters,” and selected readings from students work. The event is free.
