Achievements : Area residents complete basic

Four area residents recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Air Force Airman Joseph Amos is a 2005 graduate of John R. Rogers High School and is the son of Nancy Amos, Spokane.

Air Force Airman Kevin Grasso is the son of Cindy Grasso of Spokane. He graduated from Shadle Park High School in 2006.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Andrew Grundhauser is a 2006 graduate of John R. Rogers High School and is the son of Michael Grundhauser of Mead, and Lorissa Warner of Newport News, Va.

Air Force Airman 1st Class David Salerno graduated from Medical Lake High School in 2003.

“ Army Spec. Matthew Hoff of Medical Lake was awarded the Army Commendation Medal.

Hoff was given his medal for exceptional service while assigned as a combat medic and PLS operator during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He graduated from Medical Lake High School in 2004.

“ Army Pvt. Travis Raamot has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky.

Raamot is the son of Jacky Bronsch of Spokane and graduated in 2003 from North Central High School.

“ The Washington Air National Guard 242nd Combat Communications Squadron received an overall “outstanding” grade in its recent operational readiness inspection conducted by Headquarters, Air Combat Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. The rating was the highest the command has ever given to a unit of similar size to date. The 242 CBCS has 120 personnel assigned. The rating was also the squadron’s best in its 53 year history.

“ Girl Scouts Inland Empire Council recently acknowledged several local volunteers for their outstanding volunteer service and commitment to building girls of courage, confidence, and character through Girl Scouting.

Kallie Monasmith, a student at Washington State University, recently received a $1,500 Murray W. Bundy Scholarship and a $1,000 Sidney R. Buckley and Daughter Honors Scholarship. Monasmith graduated from Jenkins High School in Chewelah, Wash., in 2004, and is the daughter of Patrick and Diane Monasmith of Chewelah.

Jon Dowling of Steptoe, Wash., was named to the fall 2006 president’s list at Lewis-Clark State College. Dowling is a graduate of St. John Endicott High School.

Matthew Hubbell of Spokane was named to the Seaver College dean’s list for fall 2006 at Pepperdine University.

Brian Kaxemba of Spokane Valley was named to the president’s honor roll at Washington State University for fall 2006. He is the son of Leslie and Charlotte Perin of Spokane Valley.

Kara Kaxemba of Spokane Valley was named to Eastern Washington University’s dean’s list for fall 2006 and winter 2007. She is the daughter of Leslie and Charlotte Perin of Spokane Valley.

“ University of Idaho’s Wildlife professor Edward “Oz” Garton was awarded the Arthur S. Einarsen Award by The Wildlife Society for outstanding service the wildlife profession and his dedication to wildlife resources.

“ The following University of Idaho students and graduates were recently awarded Mark of Excellence awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Tara Roberts: first place for editorial writing.

Melissa Davlin: first place for feature photography.

Sam Taylor: second place for breaking news reporting and third place for feature reporting.

Hartley Reidner: second place for general news reporting.

Nate Poppino: third place for editorial writing.

Carissa Wright: third place for best all-around student magazine.

Bruce Mann: third place for feature photography.
