The Slice: Take a moment to let this soak in

There are people in Spokane who actually have this thought: “If I place the sprinkler here, it will be all but impossible for anyone to use the sidewalk without getting wet or stepping out into traffic.”

I didn’t say there are a lot of people who fret about that. And I am not suggesting that all those who weigh that concern eventually decide against the sidewalk-soaking sprinkler position.

I just want to acknowledge that not everyone is utterly oblivious to the existence of others.

Sometimes, these days, that is as close as you’ll get to actual consideration.

“Just wondering: Did you know singer Tyrone Wells when he was a kid in Spokane?

“Slice answer: “If you want to observe someone photographed several thousand times in one day, stop by the vulture at the top of Doomsday Hill on Bloomsday,” wrote professional pollster Bill Robinson, the man inside the carrion-eater costume. “While Bloomsday participation has plateaued, the proliferation of small digital cameras and camera cell phones make the vulture busier every year.”

“Clarifications: 1. There is no evidence to suggest that the classic Charles Atlas cartoon ad, “The Insult that Made a Man out of Mac” — aka “Hero of the Beach” — was based on an Idaho incident.

2. Having been a crossing guard as a kid does not entitle you to refer to yourself as a veteran.

3. There has never been a Bloomsday T-shirt dominated by the depiction of a homeowner complaining about the sudden proliferation of rentals in his neighborhood.

4. Remember that routine where the late James Brown’s bandmates would start to help the exhausted singer off the stage — only to see him spring back into action? Sure. Well, that’s a poor management model.

5. Dina Napoli and Christine Clayburg were not the same person.

6. No matter how obnoxious their in-your-face jaywalking, it is not legal to instructively tap pointlessly disaffected youths with your bumper.

“Slice answer: An excellent case could be made that certain Lilac Festival volunteers attend more Inland Northwest small-town celebrations than anyone else. Several of the Spokane festival’s organizers annually check out more than 20 far-flung community shebangs, said a friend who has been one of those road warriors.

“One possible reason for making a real project out of packing the lunch you bring to work: For some, it’s important to have at least one thing to look forward to each day.

“Today’s Slice question: What is the No. 1 honeymoon destination for couples getting married here?
