Two Sasquatch in second
Community Colleges of Spokane athletes hold runner-up positions after the first of two days of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges multi-events track championships at Spokane Falls CC.
Curtis Parrish, who won the 100 in 11.14 seconds, is 45 points off the pace being set by Collin Cram of Lane (3,494-3,449) in the decathlon after five of the 10 events.
Jennifer Bolton leads a trio of Sasquatch giving chase to Amber Glunt of Mt. Hood in the pentathlon. Glunt has 2,438 points through four of the seven events. Bolton, who won the shot put and tied Glunt for first in the high jump, has 2,355. Leslie Baker is third (2,289) and Natalie Abersfeller fourth (2,274).
The event resumes at 9 a.m. today at SFCC.
•Three Idaho athletes turned in NCAA Regional-qualifying marks in the steeplechase at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational Saturday in Stanford, Calif.
Junior Diego Moreno moved into Idaho’s all-time top five in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a WAC-leading, NCAA Regional time of 8:51.12. The six-second personal best gave Moreno a ninth-place finish and moved him back into the top 20 in the nation.
Senior Bevin Kennelly turned in her best time of the season and second best of her career with a regional-qualifying 10:23.95 in a sixth-place finish. She moved into the top 15 in the nation.
Sophomore Allix Lee-Painter finished 12th with a 13-second personal best of 10:39.43 to qualify for the NCAA Regional.
Baseball
Kody Anderson’s run-scoring single in the top of the 10th inning gave Community Colleges of Spokane a 9-8 win at Walla Walla.
Anderson’s hit drove in Justin Krieger, who led off the inning with a single. Aaron Guinn, the third CCS pitcher, shut down the Warriors in the bottom of the 10th to earn the victory.
•Gonzaga senior Clayton Mortensen was named co-Pitcher of the Week in the West Coast Conference after a complete-game, four-hit, 1-0 shutout at San Francisco in which he struck out 10. It was named the West Region performance of the week by InsidePitching.com.
Mortensen has 97 strikeouts this season, 12th in the nation and seventh in GU’s single-season record book.
College golf
Washington State and Idaho have been selected for the NCAA West Regional women’s tournament May 10-12 in St. George, Utah.
Three 21-team regionals will be held at that time, paring the field to the top eight teams and two individuals at each site to advance to the NCAA Championships May 22-25 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
This will be the sixth straight regional appearance for WSU, which is seeded 16th. Western Athletic Conference champion Idaho is seeded 15th.
•Community Colleges of Spokane finished second in an NWAACC women’s tournament in the Tri-Cities, but wrapped up an 11-1 season to capture a fifth straight Eastern Region title under coach Christie Dalsanders.
Columbia Basin edged CCS 497-501 in the six-team event. Sarah Villalovoz of CCS tied for fifth at 162.
•CCS’s Jason Azzarito tied for third at 4-over 148 as the Sasquatch third in an NWAACC men’s tournament in the Tri-Cities. Walla Walla won at 603. CCS shot 624.
Hockey
Mark Miles, a member of the Spokane Chiefs front office since 1995 and vice president of business operations for five years, has acquired 1 percent ownership in the Western Hockey League team, the club announced.
“I am proud to have Mark as a co-owner,” said Chiefs president Bobby Brett said. “Mark’s leadership is one of the big reasons that our organization is successful.”
Miles, who joined Brett Sports in 1994 as an account executive with the Indians baseball team before joining the Chiefs, joins Brett and general manager Tim Speltz as members of the ownership group who also serve on the team’s management staff. Other owners include members of the Brett family and long-time Brett associates.
High school baseball
Derek Gianukakis of Republic struck out 11 and walked two in a seven-inning no-hitter against visiting Springdale and the Tigers won the Panorama League game 8-0. Gianukakis had a double, triple and homer in game two in an 18-2 victory.
High school golf
Tyler McDougall and Nick Ellis of Eastmont finished atop the leaderboard with matching 1-under-par 71s in the Inland Empire tournament at Deer Park Golf Club.
Connor Moran from Lewis and Clark shot a 2-over 73 for a fourth-place finish and Hank Frame of University tied for fifth with a 74.
Eastmont finished with a 297, followed by U-Hi (316), Ferris (318) and Mead (321).
