In brief: CdA plans talks to keep Ironman

The Spokesman-Review

The city of Coeur d’Alene plans to start negotiations with Ironman North America, ensuring the triathlon stays in Kootenai County for another five years.

The Coeur d’Alene City Council approved a letter of intent Tuesday, expressing the city’s interest in hashing out a new contract covering races from 2008 through 2012.

The council approved the initial five-year contract in 2003 with Ironman and the Coeur d’Alene Area Chamber of Commerce.

The contract outlines what responsibilities the city, chamber and Ironman have in putting on the massive race.

A draft of the intent letter shows a $15,000 increase in the $50,000 annual marketing fee the chamber pays toward Ironman’s advertising, television and media activities.

Sunday’s race will be the fifth for Coeur d’Alene. It includes a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run.
