Notebook: Atlanta’s Jones sent to D.L.

Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones is going on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised right hand.
Manager Bobby Cox said the team will place Jones on the disabled list today. He has been experiencing pain in both hands since a base-running collision on May 11 and had missed seven straight games before the Braves opened a weekend series against the Chicago Cubs on Friday. Jones received a cortisone shot following the game on May 23 but felt no improvement.
Torre gives opinion
New York Yankees manager Joe Torre concluded Alex Rodriguez shouldn’t have distracted a Toronto fielder this week during a popup, joining a chorus of baseball people who said the two-time A.L. MVP broke the sport’s unwritten code.
“It was probably inappropriate to do it at the time he did it, but you can’t change it, unfortunately,” said Torre.
Pitcher, catcher scuffle
Chicago Cubs pitcher Carlos Zambrano shoved catcher Michael Barrett in the dugout during the middle of the fifth inning of the game against Atlanta in Chicago.
Zambrano was seen pointing and yelling at Barrett in the dugout before the bottom half, then shoved him. Neither came out for the sixth.
Clearing the bases
The Yankees placed Jason Giambi on the 15-day disabled list with torn tissue in his left foot that is expected to sideline him at least three weeks, and perhaps much longer. Detroit designated hitter Gary Sheffield was suspended three games for arguing a strike call and then throwing his bat in Cleveland and San Diego catcher Josh Bard was suspended three games for making contact with umpire Ed Rapuano at Pittsburgh. … The Chicago White Sox put outfielder Darin Erstad on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left ankle. … The San Diego Padres activated right-hander Clay Hensley from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Portland. … Third baseman David Wright (back spasms) joined center fielder Carlos Beltran (bruised right knee) on the sidelines for the New York Mets before the game against Arizona.
