Police and federal agents extended their search to Chicago on Sunday for four children and their mother, whose ex-boyfriend authorities say shot a man and kidnapped them in Indiana the day before.

Authorities have issued an Amber Alert and said the children and their mother, 31-year-old Kimberly N. Walker, were in extreme danger. Walker and Jerry D. White, 30, the father of the four children, once lived in Chicago, and White has family there, police said.

Elkhart police said they recovered two cars Saturday night, a Dodge Intrepid that White used to flee and Walker’s two-door Saturn, which he is suspected of stealing Friday. .

Richardson moves campaign forward

Democrat Bill Richardson took the first step Sunday toward a bid to become the first Hispanic president, saying the country needs his extensive experience as a governor, Cabinet secretary and ambassador.

The 59-year-old New Mexico governor announced in a video posted on his Web site that he would set up an exploratory committee that will allow him to begin raising money and assembling his campaign organization.

A former U.N. ambassador, Energy Department secretary and congressman, Richardson stressed his experience. He said he wanted U.S. troops to return quickly from Iraq and urged a change of leadership that would work to bridge a partisan divide.

Classic sports car gets record price

An 800-horsepower Shelby Cobra, once the personal car of the racing veteran who developed the iconic sports car, has sold for $5.5 million at auction, a record for an American car.

The sale of the 1966 Shelby Cobra “Super Snake” brought a packed house to its feet Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction after a pair of bidders drove the price up.

Carroll Shelby, 84, who created the Cobra in the ‘60s using Ford engines and a British chassis, said he built the Super Snake – with twin superchargers on a 427 cubic inch V-8 – and drove it for years.

“I killed a buzzard with it,” Shelby said before the sale.
