THE SLICE

I was listening to some 1940s big band music when a troubling thought occurred to me.

Are kids no longer being afforded the opportunity to be delighted/horrified by the sight of their parents dancing in the kitchen?

That would be sad.

It seems like it ought to be a part of growing up to head for the fridge and discover mom and dad swinging and swaying.

“Ewwwwww!”

But do grown-ups dance these days?

A few generations ago, it was a standard social skill. When men and women who danced as young adults got married and had families, they tended to get old and boring quickly enough. But they didn’t forget how to throw a few steps.

And when the mood was right, their kids occasionally got a glimpse of how the world looked before diapers and mortgages.
