NHL: Ortmeyer guides Rangers to victory
Martin Straka tied All-Star Brendan Shanahan for the New York goal lead, and Jed Ortmeyer scored on a late penalty shot Saturday to give the Rangers a 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins in New York.
With a new set of forward lines, the Rangers played sound defense and snapped a two-game losing streak.
Michael Nylander gave the Rangers a short-lived lead in the first period before Marc Savard tied it less than a minute later. Straka put New York ahead for good in the second with his 24th goal.
Ortmeyer, playing in his sixth game after missing 40 while recovering from a pulmonary embolism, netted his first goal on his first career penalty shot. He was pulled down during a short-handed breakaway, and after receiving advice at the bench from enforcer Ryan Hollweg, beat goalie Tim Thomas with a head-and-leg fake and then a deke with 2:47 remaining.
Senators 8, Canadiens 3: At Ottawa, Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and four assists, and Chris Kelly had a career-high four points in Ottawa’s win over Montreal.
Dany Heatley added a goal and two assists as Ottawa scored four goals in each of the first two periods.
Blues 6, Kings 5: At St. Louis, Yutaka Fukufuji made his NHL debut but allowed Denis Wideman’s power-play goal midway through the third period as St. Louis beat Los Angeles.
Fukufuji, the first Japanese native to play in the NHL, entered to start the third in relief of Barry Brust. He faced five shots on goal, but allowed Wideman’s goal.
Penguins 5, Flyers 3: At Philadelphia, Jordan Staal scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia for its sixth victory this season against its cross-state rivals.
At least this one was close. The Penguins have twice scored eight goals against the NHL-worst Flyers.
Lightning 3, Sabres 2: At Buffalo, N.Y., Brad Richards scored the go-ahead goal 7 minutes into the third period, helping Tampa Bay to a win over Buffalo.
Vincent Lecavalier, with his team-leading 27th, and Dan Boyle also scored in extending Tampa Bay’s win streak to a season-best four games.
Flames 3, Oilers 1: At Calgary, Alberta, Dion Phaneuf scored the tiebreaking power-play goal at 11:29 of the third period and Calgary went on to beat Edmonton.
Jeff Friesen and Matthew Lombardi also scored for the Flames.
Predators 4, Blue Jackets 1: At Columbus, Ohio, Jerred Smithson had his first career two-goal game and Nashville beat Columbus.
Paul Kariya and Shea Weber also scored for the Predators, who have won 13 of their last 16.
Canucks 6, Maple Leafs 1: At Toronto, Daniel Sedin, Mattias Ohlund, Trevor Linden, Taylor Pyatt, and Sami Salo scored power-play goals to lead Vancouver to a victory over Toronto.
Devils 2, Islanders 1 (OT): At Uniondale, N.Y., Scott Gomez scored with 1:20 left in overtime to lift New Jersey to a win over New York.
Patrik Elias took the puck in the Islanders zone, drew a defenseman down, and passed up to Gomez, who slid the puck in the short side past Rick DiPietro for his eighth goal.
Avalanche 3, Ducks 2 (SO): At Anaheim, Calif., Milan Hedjuk scored the deciding goal in the shootout and Colorado beat Anaheim.
Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf sent the game to overtime with a goal from the slot off a feed from Corey Perry with 11:03 to play.
Thrashers 4, Hurricanes 3 (SO): At Raleigh, N.C., Slava Kozlov and Marian Hossa scored in the shootout to give Atlanta a win over Carolina.
The Thrashers snapped a five-game losing streak to stretch their lead back to five points over the second-place Hurricanes in the Southeast Division.
Red Wings 6, Blackhawks 3: At Detroit, Jason Williams had two goals and Detroit beat Chicago.
Detroit’s Chris Osgood, who gave Dominik Hasek the night off, made 33 saves.
Panthers 7, Capitals 3: At Sunrise, Fla., Stephen Weiss scored three goals for his first career hat trick and Florida beat Washington.
Jay Bouwmeester had two goals and two assists for Florida.
Sharks 4, Coyotes 1: At Glendale, Ariz., Ryane Clowe had two goals and an assist, Vesa Toskala made 29 saves and San Jose beat Phoenix.
Jonathan Cheechoo and Matt Carle also scored, and Joe Thornton added three assists for the Sharks, who won for the fifth time in six games.
