Area women: Bowman, Ridenour lead Bulldogs past Gaels

Freshman Heather Bowman scored a game-high 20 points to lead Gonzaga past visiting Saint Mary’s (7-9, 1-2) 85-49 in West Coast Conference play Saturday.

Katy Ridenour added 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor, including 2 of 3 from the 3-point line. She also chipped in a game-high five steals and two assists for the Bulldogs (12-8, 4-0).

“Sophomore Phynique Allen scored a career-high 26 points, but Portland State (5-12, 1-3) got the upper hand in an 84-82 win over Eastern Washington in Big Sky Conference play at Portland.

Joanna Chadd and Brittney Osborn scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the Eagles (6-11, 1-3).

Eastern Washington made 22 of 25 shots from the free-throw line.

“Freshman JJ Hones scored a season-high 17 points to lead No. 10 Stanford (14-3, 7-0) past Washington State 63-55 in Pac-10 Conference play at Pullman.

Marisa Stotler and Amanda DuRocher led the Cougars (5-13, 1-7) with 17 points. Washington State has lost seven straight.

“Devanei Hampton scored 17 of her 25 points in the first half and No. 22 California (13-4, 4-3) took advantage of cold shooting by Washington (12-7, 5-3) for a 72-49 Pac-10 Conference win in Seattle.

“Liz Beardslee scored 13 points and hauled in 11 rebounds to lead Community Colleges of Spokane past Blue Mountain 68-57 in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges action at Pendleton, Ore.

“Susan McDaniel buried a go-ahead, 18-foot jumper, and Leah Pomante sealed Whitworth’s 63-60 victory over Pacific Lutheran with two clutch free throws at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates (10-5, 4-2) successfully rebounded from Friday’s home loss against Puget Sound in which they let a double-digit lead evaporate. Whitworth’s victory was the first against PLU (8-6, 3-3) in five games.

The Pirates trailed by as much as 40-31 in the second half, but Alida Bower swayed the momentum with a pair of 3-pointers.

“Anikia Jawara scored 24 points as New Mexico State (8-8, 3-1) defeated Idaho 70-65 in Western Athletic Conference play at Las Cruces, N.M.

Katie Madison scored 23 points and Sara Dennehy added 19 to lead Idaho. Liz Witte chipped in 17 points for the Vandals (3-12, 0-4).
