Man found dead in apartment

John Rudolf Staff writer

Police are investigating a possible homicide at the Gray Court Apartments near Division Street and Gray Court after officers responding to a 911 call Thursday found a man dead in an apartment.

The body was found in Apt. 201 and has yet to be identified, Cpl. Tom Lee said.

The woman who rents the apartment was detained by police for questioning. She has not been identified.

One of her neighbors, Sean Wright, 23, said police told him that the man in the apartment had been stabbed to death. However, a police spokesman would not confirm the manner of death.

The building manager, who declined to give his name, said the woman in Apt. 201 had lived alone in the apartment for two to three years. She was quiet and never caused any problems, he said. Two cats were found in the apartment with the body and were taken away by animal control.

The manager said he was working Thursday afternoon in the apartment directly underneath the one where the body was found, and he heard no sounds of violence or struggle.

The 911 call came at 4:46 p.m. Thursday from a person who told officers they had found a dead man in the apartment. The renter was not present when officers arrived.

However, she called Spokane police a short time later from the area of Francis Avenue and Freya Street in northeast Spokane, Lee said. She was driving the victim’s car at the time. The car has been impounded as evidence.
