The Slice The Spokesman-Review

Today’s kids have skills.

Most are computer savvy. Many can quickly figure out just about any electronic gizmo.

But do they understand people?

This came to mind during a conversation with my friend Gary Wentling. He recalled delivering newspapers back when he was a kid in Pennsylvania. The work itself was certainly a learning experience. But he acquired special insights on human nature on collection day – when he would go around to his 117 customers and solicit payment.

“Some people, knowing I was out there, wouldn’t even come to the door,” he said.

Ask anyone who tossed newspapers back then. Everyone has stories.

It’s pretty much an adult activity these days. But once upon a time, there were young people who got the news early on that some grown-ups deserve contempt.
