In brief: 1 killed, 8 hurt in crash on U.S. Highway 95

The Spokesman-Review

A 14-year-old Bridgeport, Wash., boy was killed late Saturday and eight members of his extended family were injured when their Chevy Suburban crashed through a guardrail and down a ravine on U.S. Highway 95 near Grangeville, Idaho.

George L. Lopez-Holivarez died of head and chest injuries at the scene of the 11:17 p.m. crash. A relative, Jose E. Lopez-Rincon, 36, of Omak, was in serious condition at Deaconess Medical Center, a hospital official said Sunday.

Seven other family members were admitted to Syringa General Hospital in Grangeville, where they were stabilized, said Steve Frei, hospital nursing supervisor.

The family was traveling to southern Idaho, said Idaho State Police Trooper Joshua Larsen.

The driver of the car, Rosa M. Lopez-Rincon, 53, of Bridgeport, apparently lost control of the 1997 Suburban in a gravel-covered turnout. She overcorrected, went through a guardrail and down a steep, 250-foot ravine, police said. The vehicle rolled several times before stopping against a tree. Several of the vehicle’s occupants were ejected.

“We don’t know whether she fell asleep or what happened,” said Larsen. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor, he said.

Two family members, the driver and Nancy A. Saucedo-Lopez, 13, of Bridgeport, appeared to be wearing seat belts, police said. The rest of the passengers were unrestrained.

Other victims include Julian Lopez-Rincon, 43; Socorro Lopez-Holivarez, 43; Ana B. Lopez-Holivarez, 17; Juan C. Lopez-Holivarez, 19; and Daisy M. Saucedo-Lopez, 14, all of Bridgeport.
