Elderly pedestrians struck by truck

The Spokesman-Review

Two elderly pedestrians received minor injuries Friday morning when they were struck by a one-ton pickup truck that was pulling out of a North Sullivan Road parking lot, said Spokane Valley Police spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan..

The victims, a 74-year-old man and his 70-year-old wife, were walking southbound on the sidewalk in front of the Shari’s Restaurant at 320 N. Sullivan about 9:55 a.m., traffic Officer Joe Bonin reported.

The 2000 Ford pickup, equipped with a winch and tow hitch on the front bumper, was driven by 51-year-old Marcia D. Belles-Mumford, 701 N. Adams Road.

Bonin said that security video from a nearby business showed that she came to a stop before leaving the Shari’s parking lot, but had to wait for numerous northbound vehicles to pass and did not look to her right a second time before pulling out.

She struck the victims at low speed and knocked them into the street. The husband and wife suffered bumps and bruises and were taken to a local medical center to be checked. Both are residents of an adult care facility located at 16900 E. Seventh Ave.

Bonin cited Belles-Mumford for failure to yield to a pedestrian, a $175 civil infraction.
