Achievements: CdA Arts Commission names Mayor’s Awards winners

The City of Coeur d’Alene’s Arts Commission announced the winners of the 12th annual Mayor’s Awards in the Arts.

William Rhodes, Excellence in the Arts; Julie Powell, Arts in Education; Martin and Carol Stacey, Support of the Arts.

Shane Kelpin of Hayden was awarded a SolvayCARES cystic fibrosis scholarship for the 2007-08 academic year.

Sasha Westly from Lakes Bible Academy in Rathdrum received a Superior Award for her poetry in a Speech Meet against students from The Oaks Academy in Spokane and Logos School in Moscow. Other students awarded in the meet are: Brooke Mayberry, Abby Stanchfield, Julia Kaplan, Alexa Ricks, Cara Crateau and Ben Kaplan.

“ North Idaho College recently announced achievements of their instructors and students.

Nils Rosdahl received the 2007 College Media Advisors Distinguished Advisor award.

Gary Clark of Post Falls was awarded a $500 scholarship from the Cisco Learning Institute.

“Local high school students received awards at the 26th annual NIC Math Contest. Students are listed by division standings.

Division I, Seniors

First place: Ryan Williams, Sandpoint High School.

Second place: Joseph Tamasonis, Post Falls High School.

Third place: John Aycicek, Lakeland High School.

Division II, Seniors

First place: Patrick McHail, Kootenai High School.

Second place: Susanne Lynch, Timberlake Jr./Sr. High School.

Third place: Tess Doumas, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy.

Division I, Non-seniors

First place: John Brusaw, Sandpoint High School.

Second place: Bryant Baird, Lake City High School.

Third place: David Tee, Coeur d’Alene High School.

Division II, Non-seniors

First place: Evan McCarty, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy.

Second place: Jamie Haddock, Potlatch High School.

Third place: John Frei, Potlatch High School.

“Five Idaho students received awards in the NIC Fall 2007 Speech Contest for speeches written in their Communications 101 classes.

Jasmine Williams of Rathdrum won a $125 prize; Adrielle Dunn of Rexburg, Idaho, was awarded $100; Ryan McGee of Coeur d’Alene received $50; Sasha Kopriva of Coeur d’Alene was awarded $125; and Bekah Stephens of Post Falls received $100.

NIC Culinary Arts Instructor Mikki Stevens was recognized as the 2007 Alumnus of the Year for her commitment to the college and community. Edie McCormick, NIC Ponderay Center Educational Resource Coordinator, was recognized as the Honorary Alumnus of the Year for her service to the college.

Dottie May Paulson is a fourth-grade teacher at Holy Family Catholic School.

Colleen Peloquin teaches second grade at Spirit Lake Elementary School.

“ Four local winners of the 13th annual Forest Products Week Essay Contest, sponsored by the Idaho Forest Products Commission were recently announced.

Melissa Trost, Priest River Junior High School; Sydney Jackson, Ramsey Elementary School; Shannon Dryden, River City Middle School; and Luke Hill, Sandpoint High School.

“Five local Sandpoint High School students were recently recognized for their talents at the Journalism Education Association meet in Philadelphia.

Ryan Williams, superior rating, Newswriting; Paulina Gralow, superior rating, Sports Writing; Morgan Willis, superior rating, Review Writing; Kathleen Vardell, excellent rating, Copy Editing/Headline/Caption; and Samantha May, honorable mention, Newspaper Sports Photography.
