Notebook : Yankees lose another pitcher

The New York Yankees lost another starting pitcher Saturday when Jeff Karstens was hit by a line drive, breaking his right leg in New York.
On his first pitch of the game against Boston, Karstens was hit on the side of his knee by Julio Lugo’s liner. He won’t need surgery and is expected to return this season, team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon said.
“It’s not as bad as it could have been,” Hershon said.
In the clubhouse after the game, Karstens had an air cast on his leg. He won’t need a conventional cast, Hershon said.
“They said no throwing tomorrow at least,” Karstens joked.
The right-hander crumpled to the ground in pain after he was hit by the line drive, and Lugo reached first base with an infield single. A trainer and manager Joe Torre came out of the dugout to check on Karstens, who stayed down for a minute or two.
Indians dispute run
A bizarre set of circumstances in the game between the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians featured a run that was disallowed in the third inning apparently being counted three innings later.
The Orioles were leading 2-1 in the top of the third in Cleveland with Nick Markakis on third base and Miguel Tejada on first and one out when Ramon Hernandez hit a line drive to center field. Grady Sizemore made a diving catch and Markakis tagged up and headed for home. Tejada was around second when the ball was caught and was thrown out trying to get back to first.
It appeared Markakis crossed the plate well before Tejada was called out at first, but plate umpire Marvin Hudson waved off the run.
After the Indians scored a run in the fifth to tie it at 2, it was announced in the bottom of the sixth that the Orioles’ run in the third counted, giving Baltimore a 3-2 lead. The Indians then announced they were playing the game under protest.
Thome sent to DL
White Sox slugger Jim Thome was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a rib cage injury after Chicago’s 3-0 loss to the Angels.
Thome left Friday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels after fouling off a pitch in the first inning. He re-aggravated a right rib cage injury that caused him to miss the two previous games.
