Bonnell shines in Huskies scrimmage
SEATTLE – For one day phenom Jake Locker didn’t look as good as Carl Bonnell. He didn’t complete as many passes, had fewer touchdowns and an interception.
But Bonnell could have looked like Dan Marino during Washington’s spring game on Saturday, and Locker still would be the Huskies’ starter on Aug. 31 at Syracuse.
Locker, a redshirt freshman and former high school star from Ferndale, Wash., completed just 4 of 8 passes for 38 yards with one touchdown and an interception.
Bonnell was 8 for 15 for 127 yards and three scoring passes. He and Locker’s starter-filled Purple team beat the reserves on the Gold 44-7. So how close is the competition between the Huskies’ supposed savior and Bonnell after 14 practices and Saturday’s show?
Willingham smiled and stretched his arms as far out to each side as he could.
“That far,” the coach said.
