Coaching family grows at EWU

Eastern Washington women’s basketball coach Wendy Schuller and football coach Paul Wulff’s wife, Sherry, had babies one day apart in 2003.

Mary Burns, the wife of basketball coach Mike Burns, matched that on Saturday, giving birth to twins.

Daughter Kylie came first, followed by brother, Bode.

“She’s the older, more responsible one,” coach Burns said. “All indications are that he’ll be a great shooter.”

Bode weighs 5 pounds, 10 ounces and is 19 inches long. Kylie is two ounces lighter and a half-inch shorter.

The twins add to the population explosion in Cheney. Wulff and three of his assistants welcomed new family members in a five month span beginning last December.

Alexander out for two weeks

League MVP Shaun Alexander has a broken left foot and will be lost to the Seattle Seahawks for at least a couple of weeks.

Coach Mike Holmgren said Monday that a bone scan revealed Alexander sustained a “small crack” and “displaced fracture” on a non-weight- bearing bone in his foot sometime during the Seahawks’ 42-30 win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

The coach said last season’s NFL rushing leader was on crutches inside team headquarters Monday.

“You lose the MVP for a while, it’s a hit,” Holmgren said. “Let’s face it, he’s the MVP.”

Alexander will miss at least Sunday night’s showdown at Chicago. Seattle has its bye the following week before playing at division rival St. Louis.

“I don’t think it will be lengthy,” Holmgren said. “He just has to stay off of it and let it heal.”

Utah State assistant quits

Utah State offensive coordinator Mike Santiago has resigned just four games into his second season on coach Brent Guy’s staff.

The Aggies have not scored a point on offense this season and rank last nationally in both total offense and scoring.

The Aggies open the Western Athletic Conference season Saturday at home against the Idaho Vandals.

Santiago said in a news release that he was resigning because of philosophical differences.
