Mauresmo out-matched in China Open

Top-ranked Amelie Mauresmo was routed in the China Open final Sunday in Beijing, losing 6-4, 6-0 to Svetlana Kuznetsova in a final interrupted because of rain.

Kuznetsova, seeded second, captured her second straight title after having won last week in Bali. Mauresmo has won the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year.

Virginia Ruano Pascal of Spain and Paola Suarez of Argentina won the doubles title, beating Russians Anna Chakvetadze and Elena Vesnina 6-2, 6-4.

•Martina Hingis defeated first-time finalist Olga Poutchkova of Russia 6-0, 6-4 to win the Sunfeast Open in Calcutta, India for her second title since coming out from retirement.

The top-seeded Swiss overcame an erratic serve in the second set to make short work of Poutchkova. This was the 42nd WTA Tour title for the five-time major winner.

•Fifteen-year-old Tamira Paszek of Austria won her first WTA Tour title, beating sixth-seeded Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 7-5, 6-1 at the Slovenia Open in Portoroz, Slovenia.

Rono runs to victory

Kenyan Daniel Rono ran the second fastest marathon time ever in Canada to win the Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon in Toronto.

Rono ran the course in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 14 seconds to beat Abderrahime Bouramdane of Morocco by 26 seconds. The only faster race was at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where Waldemar Cierpinski ran 2:09.55 to win the gold.

•Haile Gebrselassie won the Berlin Marathon on a course where records have fallen of late, and Gete Wami made it an Ethiopian sweep by capturing the women’s division.

Gebrselassie was a minute off the world record, covering the 26.2 miles in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 56 seconds.

Bettini sprints to win

Olympic champion Paolo Bettini of Italy outsprinted Erik Zabel to win the cycling road race at the world championships in Salzburg, Austria.

Bettini was supposed to make the difference in the hills but proved strongest in a sprint to the finish, riding by Zabel over the last 100 yards to capture his first title.
