Alou reaches 2,000 career hits

Moises Alou picked up his 2,000th career hit Sunday when the San Francisco Giants right fielder hit a bloop double in the second inning against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Alou became the 244th player in baseball history to reach the milestone. He needs one more double to reach 400 in his career.

•Chicago White Sox pitcher Jose Contreras will miss the rest of the season after leaving his last start with a strained right hamstring, manager Ozzie Guillen said.

• Nick Johnson had successful surgery on his broken right leg, and the Washington Nationals’ first baseman is expected to be ready for spring training next year.

A titanium rod was inserted into his fractured right femur during the two-hour procedure.
