Humor for caregivers – Humor researcher and psychologist Paul McGhee will speak on “Humor as Survival Training for Caregivers, You and Others Who Care,” 8 a.m.-noon Friday at the Spokane Falls Community College Student Union Building Lounges A and B, 3410 W. Growing our Heritage – Gala art auction by the Friends of Paulsen House. Artwork by local artists will be auctioned to raise money for the preservation and maintenance of Paulsen House, part of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane. Gourmet hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar, 6 p.m. Saturday, in the Great Hall at St. John’s Cathedral, 127 E. 12th Ave. Tickets are $35 per person. Swimming team tryouts – The Spokane Area Swimming Team is looking for new members age 6-16, 5-5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Sept. 20 at Witter Pool, 1400 E. Mission. Tryouts will also be held 5-5:30 p.m. Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 at the Shadle Park Pool, 4327 N. Ash. Swimmers must be able to complete 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke. (509) 326-7546.

Constitution Day lecture – David Mindich, former CNN assignment editor and professor of journalism at St. Michael’s College, will speak on “Tuning Out and Dropping Out: How Disengagement Challanged our Democracy and Weakens Constitutional Protections,” 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at Whitworth College’s Weyerhaeuser Hall, 302 W.
