Richter, Braden first at WAC championships
Idaho freshman Rhea Richter took first place at the Western Athletic Conference cross country championships in Fresno, Calif., on Saturday, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 33.2 seconds.
Richter, in her fourth collegiate race, led from start to finish and gave Idaho its second consecutive female individual champion. Dee Olson won last year’s race.
Vandals teammate Melissa McFaddan, a freshman walk-on from Moscow, Idaho, took 16th in 18:23.7. Idaho finished fourth overall behind Utah State, Nevada and San Jose State.
On the men’s side, Bonners Ferry graduate and senior All-American Forest Braden took first place for Boise State. Braden finished the 8,000 in 24:14.5.
Kevin Friesen finished sixth for Idaho, crossing in 25:31.4 to guide the Vandals to a third-place finish.
“Washington State junior Haley Paul took 11th place at the Pac-10 Championships at the Stanford (Calif.) Golf Course, guiding the Cougars women to a sixth-place finish. Paul finished the 6,000 in 21:03.08.
Cougars teammate Collier Lawrence finished 31st in 21:51.6.
Woody Favinger finished the 8,000 course in 24:01.7 to lead the Cougars men. WSU’s Alex Grant finished next, crossing in 24:03.47 to take 19th.
The Cougars finished seventh overall.
“Gonzaga’s Joe Miller finished second and the Bulldogs men captured fourth at the West Coast Conference Championships at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Belmont, Calif.
Miller finished the 8,000 in 25:28.
GU teammate Colby Litzenberg came in 12th in 26:22.
On the women’s side, Nellie Ballou was the top Bulldogs finisher, running 5,000 in 23:53 to take 22nd. Gonzaga’s women took seventh.
“Mattie Bridgman was the top Eastern Washington women finisher at the Big Sky Championships at Granite Regional Park in Sacramento, Calif., running the 5,000 in 18:15.8 to take 12th.
Eagles teammate Camille Mosely finished in 18:27.7 to take 16th.
On the men’s side, Paul Limpf finished the 8,000 in 24:45.8 to take seventh and guide the Eagles to a seventh-place finish. Curtis Suver took eighth in 24:47.0
“Whitworth’s Julie Lauterbach took fourth place at the Northwest Conference Championships at University Golf Course on the Pacific Lutheran campus in Tacoma.
Lauterbach finished the 6,000 course in 21:46.90 and guided the Pirates women to a fifth-place finish.
On the men’s side, Jacob Deitz crossed in 25:28.97 to take 19th. The Whitworth men finished fifth overall.
Volleyball
First-place North Idaho beat Eastern Utah 30-26, 30-15, 30-15 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match in Coeur d’Alene.
Amanda Misa led the Cardinals with 10 kills and Lauren Stern added 23 assists.
North Idaho improved to 31-6, 9-2 while Eastern Utah fell to 7-23, 0-10.
“Amanda Bowman had 17 kills and Sarah Conwell added 11, but it wasn’t enough as Idaho fell 3-1 to No. 16 Hawaii in a Western Athletic Conference match late Friday night.
The Vandals fell to 7-14 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Hawaii is 16-5 overall and 8-1 in the WAC.
“Pacific Lutheran topped Whitworth 30-24, 30-26, 33-31 in a Northwest Conference match at the Whitworth Fieldhouse. Angie Florence had 12 kills and Holly Ridings added 34 assists to lead the Pirates.
Whitworth is 7-18 overall and 6-8 in the NWC. PLU improved to 19-5 overall and 13-1 in conference play.
“Becky Jones had 12 kills and Heather Dunn added 30 assists, but it wasn’t enough as visiting Pepperdine beat Gonzaga 30-23, 30-21, 30-24 in a West Coast Conference match at the Martin Centre.
Gonzaga fell to 7-17 overall and 2-7 in the WCC.
Pepperdine improved to 10-10 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
Men’s soccer
Community Colleges of Spokane shut out Treasure Valley 6-0 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges match at Spokane Falls CC.
Jay Vela had a hat trick and Brady Ostendorf had two assists to lead the Sasquatch, who improved to 15-4-1 overall and 13-3 in the NWAACC. Treasure Valley fell to 13-4 overall.
“Puget Sound (11-1-2, 8-1-2) knocked off Whitworth (9-5-3, 8-3-2) 2-0 in a Northwest Conference match in Tacoma.
Pete Van Sant made six saves for the Loggers.
