Federer takes home tenth title of season

Roger Federer won his first Madrid Masters and 10th title of the season Sunday with a 7-5, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Fernando Gonzalez in Madrid, Spain.

Federer became the first player in the Open era to win 10 titles in three straight years.

•Maria Sharapova became the first Russian to win the Zurich Open, defeating Daniela Hantuchova 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the final in Zurich, Swtzerland.

Sharapova, who won her third WTA title this season, still has a chance to finish the year as the top-ranked player.

She’d need to win next week in Linz, Austria, and at the season-ending WTA Championships in Madrid.

Football

Vols lose running back

Tennessee running back LaMarcus Coker will miss at least three weeks with a knee injury, coach Phillip Fulmer said.

Coker, who started the last three games for the No. 8 Volunteers, was hurt Saturday during a kickoff return in the fourth quarter against Alabama. He was helped off the field and did not put weight on his left leg.

Coker is the third tailback to start this season for the Volunteers.

•John Bunting is out as North Carolina’s football coach but will remain with the Tar Heels through the rest of this season, school officials said.

North Carolina (1-6, 0-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) is 0-6 against Division I-A teams this season and was coming off a 23-0 loss at Virginia.

Musselman apologizes

A teary-eyed Sacramento Kings coach Eric Musselman apologized for his arrest a day earlier on a drunken driving charge in Sacramento, Calif. His players and bosses were by his side in support.

Kings owners Gavin and Joe Maloof said no disciplinary action would be taken against the team’s first-year coach. That means Musselman will not face a fine or suspension from his bosses.

Ham fighters tie series

Fernando Seguignol hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning, leading Trey Hillman’s Nippon Ham Fighters to a 5-2 win over the Chunichi Dragons in Game 2, to tie the best-of-seven series at 1-1, of the Japan Series in Nagoya, Japan.

Miscellany

U.S. team assembled

Olympic gold medalists Chad Hedrick and Shani Davis led 10 men selected for the U.S. Long Track Speedskating team that will compete in World Cup races.

Maria Lamb led six women chosen for the team after the Fall World Cup Qualifier at the Pettit National Ice Center in West Allis, Wisconsin.

•Robert Cheruiyot held off fellow Kenyan Daniel Njenga to win the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours, 7 minutes, and 35 seconds, before slipping and banging his head near the finish line and being removed from the course on a golf cart.

Ethiopia’s Berhane Adere won the women’s race in 2:20:42 for her first marathon victory.
