Looking ahead

It’s all set up for the Sandpoint High football team.

Remember that 0-4 start back in September? That could be a distant memory with a win Friday.

First, the Bulldogs don’t want to forget September. The four straight losses in many ways have them poised to post their fifth consecutive victory.

Sandpoint (4-4 overall, 1-0 league) can secure the 4A Inland Empire League title and lone state playoff berth when the Bulldogs visit Lakeland (4-3, 0-0). Kickoff at Corbit Field is 7 p.m.

This is Sandpoint’s final regular-season game. If the Bulldogs win, they would be able to scout their first-round opponent next week.

Lakeland can’t clinch the league title and playoff berth Friday. But a win along with a victory the following Friday at Moscow would give the Hawks their first 4A playoff berth and first trip to postseason since 2002.

“Post Falls (3-4, 0-1) travels to Lewiston (3-4, 0-1) in a 5A IEL game in which the winner keeps slim postseason hopes alive.

“Lake City (7-0) and Coeur d’Alene (5-2) take to the road for games against Columbia Basin League (formerly Big Nine Conference) teams. LC visits Moses Lake (5-2), which is ranked 10th in Washington’s 4A poll and has secured a state playoff berth. CdA goes to Southridge of Kennewick (3-4), which appears to have wrapped up a 3A state playoff berth.

LC will face a team that has dominated teams with an option attack that starts out of the shotgun. The Chiefs are a big, physical team. Senior defensive lineman B.J. Guerra (6-foot-4, 301 pounds) is headed to Washington State. CdA goes against a team that features highly recruited quarterback Jason Munns. The 6-6 senior has given an oral commitment to Brigham Young.

“The Intermountain League is mentioned here because of the possibility of a three-way tie for second. Bonners Ferry (3-4, 2-1) goes to Kellogg (2-5, 1-2). If BF wins, it would finish second behind league winner Timberlake (7-0, 3-0). A BF win also means Priest River (4-4, 2-2), which has a bye, captures third and the league’s final playoff seed. A Kellogg victory puts the Wildcats, BF and PR in a three-way tie and would necessitate a Kansas tiebreaker.
