Slowpitch softball

University lost an early lead, but rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday to defeat visiting Shadle Park 6-5 in Greater Spokane League semifinal action.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Riky Schiermeister started the rally with a single and advanced to second on the play thanks to an error by the Highlanders (9-7). Alyssa Hawley drove Schiermeister in for the tying score with a single. The deciding run came when Ashley Fargher drove Hawley home with the third consecutive single of the inning.

Fargher went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Rachel Squires (4-0) picked up the win for the No. 1-seeded Titans (15-0).

Shadle, which saw its season come to an end, took a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth when Danielle Lynn hit a two-run homer.

In the other semifinal, second-seeded Rogers cruised by visiting Central Valley 14-4. Denisha Whitehead went 4 for 4 with three runs and a solo homer in the fifth to lead the Pirates (12-3), who had a two-run triple from Elizabeth Turley in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule. Samantha Shelton earned the win on the mound for Rogers, which will play at U-Hi at 3:30 p.m. today in the championship. Jennifer Knight went 3 for 4 with two RBIs for the Bears (10-6), who had their season end.

Girls soccer

Kim Byxbee’s unassisted goal in the 66th minute proved to be the difference as Ferris edged host University 2-1 in Greater Spokane League play. The Saxons (11-3, 7-2) took an early lead when Brittany Dillon scored on a pass from Byxbee. Alicia Knowles had tied the game for the Titans (7-8, 4-6) just 2 minutes before the game-winner was scored. … Also in GSL action, Ashley Hatcher completed her hat trick in the 12th minute as Mead blanked North Central (5-8, 3-6) 6-0 at Albi Stadium. Lauren Layton scored an unassisted goal and added an assist, and Caitlyn Hormel knocked in two second-half goals for the Panthers (11-1, 8-1), who are tied with Ferris atop the standings. … Shadle Park received goals from five different players in a 5-1 victory over visiting Rogers. Katelyn Hill, Chrissii Almquist, Courtney Stewart, Cori Devellum and Kiley Schatz all scored for the Highlanders (6-4, 6-3). Alyssa Sipraseuth scored an unassisted goal for the Pirates (0-11, 0-9). … Megan Lindsay scored goals in the 22nd and 45th minutes, and completed her hat trick in the 79th minute as Gonzaga Prep blanked host Mt. Spokane (8-4, 6-3) 4-0. Stacy Hamer also scored for the second-place Bullpups (9-3, 7-2), who had six saves from goalkeeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters.

Volleyball

Brittnee Brown recorded 25 assists, three aces, and two blocks to help Gonzaga Prep (7-3) in a 25-16, 25-19, 25-8 sweep of visiting Rogers (0-10) in GSL play. G-Prep clinched at least a tie for third place.

Cross country

The West Valley Eagles boys defeated Cheney 25-31 in a meet between Great Northern League unbeatens to clinch the league title. Both teams beat Deer Park. WV’s Richard Keroack was individual winner in 16 minutes, 36 seconds over a pair of Blackhawks. The Eagles had the next three finishers en route to the victory.
