Evan Palo scored a goal in the 60th minute to give Lake City (14-1-1, 10-1-1) a 1-0 win over host Moscow (7-6-3, 4-6-2) in Inland Empire League boys soccer action Saturday.
The Timberwolves only managed four shots on goal, while the Bears had three.
Lake City is tied with Coeur d’Alene (12-1-3, 10-1-1) for first place in the league standings.
Moscow stands in fifth place but is within reach of Lewiston (5-6-1) and Sandpoint (5-7-1).
• Priest River forfeited its Intermountain League contest against St. Maries because the Spartans didn’t have enough players.
Volleyball
After going 2-0 in pool play, Kellogg beat Flathead (Mont.) and then Timberlake in the championship match to win the Timberlake tournament in Spirit Lake. The Wildcats beat Kettle Falls 25-13, 25-20 and topped Timberlake’s JV 25-1, 25-13 in pool play. Kellogg then beat Flathead 25-15, 25-21 before defeating tournament host Timberlake 25-17, 25-20. In the second-place bracket, Orofino beat Clark Fork 25-21, 25-14 and knocked off Kettle Falls in its next match.
Cross country
Coeur d’Alene runner Mike Armon finished 51st at the Jim Danner Cross Country Invitational at Blue Lake Park in Gresham, Ore. Armon finished the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 27.36 seconds.
•The North Central boys and the Colville girls took first place at the Bullpup Invitational hosted by Gonzaga Prep. NC’s Adam Tyler won the race, finishing in 16:45. Teammates Andy Kimpel (16:55) and Leon Dean (16:59) finished second and third, respectively. Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) finished second, followed by Lake City. Tournament host G-Prep took seventh. On the girls’ side, Colville was led by Brittney Williams, who finished in 20:16. Sandpoint’s Megan Bartlett won the race, crossing the line in 19:52. East Valley finished second, followed by Central Valley and G-Prep.
