Local composer Gary A. Edwards will premiere his latest work, “Prayer for Peace,” at the Coeur d’Alene Symphony’s annual Christmas concerts this weekend at North Idaho College.

Also featured will be Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98, and holiday favorites including a singalong. David Demand conducts the orchestra.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for students, through TicketsWest outlets (509-325-SEAT, 800-325-SEAT, www.ticketswest.com).

Cathedral Christmas

A new arrangement by Spokane composer William Berry will be premiered at the annual free holiday concerts Sunday at St. John’s Cathedral.

Berry brought together Randall Thompson’s 1968 cantata “The Place of the Blest” with his own “Songs of Peace,” written following a July symposium in which area youth discussed peace, joy, hope and the nature of heaven.

The combined works will be performed by the Spokane Area Children’s Chorus, Spokane Youth Symphony and the Eastern Washington University Chamber Choir. Verne Windham conducts.

Concerts begin at 4 and 7 p.m. at the cathedral, at Grand Boulevard and 12th Avenue.

The program includes Mozart’s G Minor Piano Quintet; the trio for flute, cello and piano by Carl Maria Von Weber; Henri Dutilleux’s duo for flute and piano; and a duo for violin and viola by Armand Merck.

The Players, founded by violist and National Public Radio commentator Miles Hoffman, have toured the U.S. and abroad since 1985.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the UI Auditorium. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, $8 for students, at www.auditoriumchamber music.org and at the door.
