Get a close look into the ‘futures’
Web site: Spokane County Conservation Futures, revised.
Updates with revised maps, descriptions and more photos make it easy to find, explore and appreciate the 18 conservation areas secured so far by the Conservation Futures program.
Since 1994, Spokane County voters have three times approved a small property tax that has enabled the county to buy about 4,000 acres over the past 10 years. The Conservation Areas are left as undeveloped open space for passive recreational and buffers in urban areas.
Spokane County manages 10 of these areas while the city manages eight, including wetlands, farmlands, steep hillsides, river corridors, viewpoints and wildlife habitats and corridors.

Spokane’s trail angel
Mike Brixey of Spokane, cover boy for a recent issue of the International Mountain Bike Association Trail News, had to work his butt off to get there, and it wasn’t necessarily pedaling a bike.
Brixey was honored this week in Spokane by cyclists, Backcountry Horsemen and park rangers for more than a dozen years of volunteer service to improve multiple-use trails in areas such as Riverside and Mount Spokane state parks.
