Minnesota loses first shootout
Peter Budaj made 28 saves in regulation and overtime Saturday night and Joe Sakic’s shootout goal lifted the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild.
Sakic also scored the Avs’ only goal in regulation, and his nifty top-shelf backhander beat Niklas Backstrom to give Colorado a 2-1 edge in the shootout.
Budaj, who stopped two of three shots in the shootout, then stuffed Brian Rolston on Minnesota’s last chance, handing the Wild their first shootout loss of the season.
Kings 5, Coyotes 3: At Los Angeles, Alexander Frolov recorded his third consecutive two-goal game and Craig Conroy netted the go-ahead score with 11 minutes left, leading Los Angeles to a victory over Phoenix.
Hurricanes 5, Stars 4: At Raleigh, N.C., Eric Staal scored three goals and Justin Williams snapped a tie with 6:32 remaining to lift Carolina to a victory over Dallas.
Williams added two assists, and Rod Brind’Amour set up a goal to extend his point streak to eight games.
Devils 2 Maple Leafs 1: At Toronto, Martin Brodeur made 32 saves, and Jaime Langenbrunner scored in his fourth consecutive game to lead New Jersey to a win over Toronto.
Bruins 3, Capitals 2 (OT): At Boston, Glen Murray scored a power-play goal 2:06 into overtime to lift Boston to its season-high, fourth consecutive victory, a win over Washington.
Zdeno Chara and P.J. Axelsson scored for the Bruins.
Islanders 4, Panthers 1: At Sunrise, Fla., Mike Dunham made 43 saves and Arron Asham broke a second-period tie, lifting New York over Florida.
Penguins 3, Rangers 1: At Pittsburgh, Mark Recchi scored twice and Pittsburgh shut down Jaromir Jagr and New York in a victory.
Pittsburgh also got a goal from Jordan Staal and 23 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury.
Canadiens 3, Thrashers 1: At Montreal, Cristobal Huet made 37 saves and Michael Ryder and Alexander Perezhogin each ended lengthy goal-scoring droughts, leading Montreal to a win over Atlanta.
Senators 4, Sabres 1: At Ottawa, Peter Schaefer and Dany Heatley each had a goal and an assist, and Ray Emery made 23 saves as Ottawa defeated Buffalo.
Predators 4, Blue Jackets 2: At Nashville, Tenn., Jason Arnott scored two power-play goals within 48 seconds of the second period, lifting Nashville over Columbus.
Tomas Vokoun made 28 saves for the win.
Sharks 6, Flyers 1: At San Jose, Calif., Patrick Rissmiller and Milan Michalek scored in the opening 5 minutes and San Jose kept up the pressure from there, beating Philadelphia.
Rissmiller, Curtis Brown, Kyle McLaren and Ryane Clowe each had a goal and an assist for the Sharks.
Oilers 4, Red Wings 3 (SO): At Edmonton, Alberta, Raffi Torres scored the game-winning goal in the shootout to help Edmonton beat Detroit.
After a scoreless overtime, it took six shooters aside before Torres beat Joey MacDonald and Roloson stopped Robert Lang to give the Oilers the win with a 3-2 shootout edge.
