Cougars seek 4-0 record

PULLMAN – Washington State has a chance to show the home crowd tonight what it already proved on the road.

The men’s basketball team is 3-0 for the first time in 10 years, thanks to a tournament sweep in Milwaukee last weekend.

It’ll get a chance to make that 4-0 with tonight’s 8:30 home opener against Texas-San Antonio in Beasley Coliseum.

“To be 3-0 is obviously significant for us,” said first-year head coach Tony Bennett, who is the first WSU coach to start out with three wins since Marv Harshman did so in 1958.

“We got rhythm shots, which is important,” he said. “We got transition baskets and we got some easy shots. You’re not always going to go wild from the 3-point line, but the kind of shots we took were good shots.”

The Cougars won by double digits against UAB, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Radford.

Based on those performances they might be expected to have similar success tonight against the Roadrunners, who come to Pullman at 1-1 after Sunday’s loss to Texas-Pan American.

“Our program isn’t in a spot to be considered a favorite,” Bennett said. “We can’t look at what we did this weekend or look ahead. Just take each game as an opportunity for us to take another step forward in becoming a better ballclub.”
