Nike BorderClash

Sunday’s annual Nike BorderClash cross country race pits the best boys and girls high school distance runners from Washington against their Oregon counterparts.

The Washington boys’ field is heavy with Spokane-area runners. Among them are 4A champion Cameron Quackenbush, David Hickerson and Stephen Olsen from four-time team winner Ferris.

Mead’s Kelly Lynch, Kelvin Daratha and Dylan Hatcher, Central Valley’s Tylor Thatcher and Sean Coyle, and Shadle Park’s Peter Miller all qualified by virtue of top-20 state 4A finishes.

Andy Kimpel and Steve Hicks from 3A champion North Central, Richard Keroack from West Valley and Brad Serdar from Reardan are also on the team. Lakeside’s Max Reeder and NC’s Leon Dean are alternates.

The girls’ field, as of Wednesday, includes Theresa Hailey from Gonzaga Prep, Nikki Codd from Mead and Lisa Vandenburg from Northwest Christian. Mt. Spokane’s Jessica Klier and Lewis and Clark’s Eleanor Siler are alternates.

Races are run around and through Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore., on a 4,400-meter bark chip trail. The girls race is at 10:30 a.m. and the boys follow at 11:15.
