Buffalo takes another in overtime

Daniel Briere scored on a slap shot 21 seconds into overtime Saturday night to lift the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-4 win over the last-place Philadelphia Flyers.

The goal was Briere’s second of the game, sending the Sabres to their third straight overtime win and second in two nights.

Randy Robitaille scored twice for the Flyers, who lost their fifth straight game.

Philadelphia seemed poised to pull one out against an Eastern Conference rival after scoring three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead.

With 2:59 left in regulation, however, Briere knocked a rebound past a diving Antero Niittymaki to tie the score.

Philadelphia played this one without captain Peter Forsberg, still struggling to find an answer to the skate problem that’s causing him discomfort to his surgically repaired right ankle.

Hurricanes 6, Penguins 2: At Raleigh, N.C., Rod Brind’Amour had a goal and an assist, and Carolina routed Pittsburgh.

Justin Williams, Ray Whitney, Eric Belanger and Chad LaRose also scored, and Kevyn Adams had an empty-net goal to help Carolina improve to 9-3-2 in its last 14 games.

Flames 3, Canucks 2: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Kristian Huselius scored with 3:32 left to lift Calgary to a victory over Vancouver.

Maple Leafs 5, Canadiens 1: At Toronto, Bryan McCabe scored two power-play goals and assisted on another to help Toronto win its season-high fourth straight game, over rival Montreal.

Tomas Kaberle, Matt Stajan and Nik Antropov also scored for the Maple Leafs.

Capitals 3, Rangers 1: At Washington, Alex Ovechkin scored his team-high 11th goal, Boyd Gordon had a goal and an assist and Washington beat New York.

Matt Pettinger also scored for the Capitals.

Bruins 4, Senators 3: At Boston, Glen Murray scored two goals to lift Boston over Ottawa.

P.J. Axelsson had two assists for Boston.

Devils 4, Panthers 2: At East Rutherford, N.J., Patrik Elias and Zach Parise scored power-play goals in the first period to spark New Jersey to a victory over Florida.

Sergei Brylin and Jamie Langenbrunner also scored to help the Devils break out of a scoring slump.

Lightning 5, Thrashers 3: At Tampa, Fla., Vincent Lecavalier scored a goal and Martin St. Louis had two assists to extend their points streaks to 11 games, helping Tampa Bay beat Atlanta.

Ryan Craig, Dan Boyle, Brad Richards and Nikita Alexeev also scored for the Lightning.

Predators 1, Avalanche 0: At Nashville, Tenn., Chris Mason made a career-high 42 saves and Scottie Upshall scored his second goal of the season to lead Nashville to a victory over Colorado.

Sharks 2, Coyotes 1: At Glendale, Ariz., Steve Bernier and Patrick Marleau scored in the second period to rally San Jose over Phoenix.

Vesa Toskala stopped all 25 shots he faced in the last two periods.

Wild 3, Kings 2 (SO): At Los Angeles, Manny Fernandez got his 100th NHL win and Todd White scored the deciding goal in the sixth round of a shootout, leading Minnesota to a victory over Los Angeles.
