Speakers

“Faith Partners, the YWCA, Washington State University and Whitworth College are presenting an all-day conference, “Stopping Slavery in the 21st Century,” Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Quall Hall at Whitworth Presbyterian Church, 312 W. Hawthorne Road.

The conference will feature the Rev. Thelma Burgonio-Watson of the Faith Trust Institute; the Rev. Kevin Fredricks, who will speak on “The Church Addressing Violence Against Women”; Lila Lama Ghising, a Nepalese trafficking refugee; and a Whitworth student panel addressing “Real Efforts That You Can Do.”

After the conference, there will be a discussion and dessert in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall on the Whitworth campus.

“The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., is offering a lecture, “From Shakyamuni to Shinran; Tracing the Historical and Philosophical Development of Pureland Buddhism,” today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Faith Baptist Church in Colville is presenting its annual missionary conference today through Wednesday. Meetings will be at the church, 673 Arden Hill Road, and will start at 7 p.m. every day except Sunday, which will include speakers at 9:45 and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The Knouf Family Singers will perform during this series of meetings, and Thakadiyel Thompson, Dale Mooney and the Rev. Doug Rowland will speak.

Concert

“The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., is presenting the Montana Trombone Chorale on Sunday at 4 p.m.

The group of six to 12 trombonists has toured Europe and America and plays music from a variety of genres.

The cathedral will be open for self-guided tours before the concert starting at 1 p.m.

New service

New Heights Church, 708 W. Nora Ave., is offering worship services on Fridays at 7 p.m.

Bazaars and sales

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 3307 W. Rowan Ave., is presenting its third annual craft and holiday fair and sale today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Moran United Methodist Church is presenting its eighth annual penny auction and luncheon today at 11 a.m. at the Southside Senior Activity Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave.

Items for sale include gift baskets, crafts and gift donations from local businesses.

The drawing will begin at 1 p.m. Attendees can purchase auction tickets at the door in bags of 200 for $2, 500 for $5 and 1,000 for $10.

Singles groups

Life Center Church, 1202 N. Government Way, is presenting a Pure Passions Singles Conference today from 9 a.m. to noon.

The conference will feature “Dating With Pure Passion” author Rob Eagar, worship with Joel Weldon and an improvisational comedy show.
