Maple Leafs hand setback to Sabres

Mats Sundin had two goals and an assist to help the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-1 victory over Buffalo at Buffalo, N.Y., on Saturday – the Sabres’ first loss in regulation.

Darcy Tucker and Jeff O’Neill also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won four of their last five.

Jochen Hecht scored for the Sabres, who lost for the first time in regulation since a 4-2 defeat against Philadelphia on April 7. Buffalo opened this season with 10 straight wins before falling to Atlanta 5-4 in a shootout on Oct. 28.

Sabres leading scorer Maxim Afinogenov was knocked out of the game in the first period with an upper body injury. He played five shifts, totaling nearly four minutes, before heading to the dressing room.

Bruins 6, Lightning 5: At Boston, Zdeno Chara tied the game with 46.6 seconds left in regulation, then Glen Murray scored the winner 17 seconds into overtime as Boston rallied to beat Tampa Bay.

Hurricanes 3, Senators 2: At Ottawa, Ray Whitney scored twice and Erik Cole had one goal and two assists as Carolina handed Ottawa its third consecutive loss.

Red Wings 4, Blue Jackets 1: At Detroit, Dan Cleary scored his first two goals of the season, including a short-handed effort, to lift Detroit to a win over Columbus.

Devils 2, Canadiens 1: At Montreal, Martin Brodeur made 33 saves, and Jay Pandolfo and Brian Rafalski scored to lead New Jersey to a win over Montreal.

Thrashers 4, Islanders1: At Uniondale, N.Y., Marian Hossa had a goal and assist, and Johan Hedberg made 23 saves to win his second straight start in Atlanta’s victory over New York.

Capitals 5, Flyers 3: At Philadelphia, Alexander Ovechkin scored two of Washington’s four goals in the first period and carried the Capitals to a victory against Philadelphia.

Ben Clymer also scored twice.

Predators 4, Wild 3: At St Paul, Minn., Shea Weber scored the go-ahead goal in the third period as Nashville edged Minnesota.

Paul Kariya, Steve Sullivan and Kimmo Timonen also scored for Nashville.

Flames 3, Blues 2: At St. Louis, Jarome Iginla scored a power-play goal with 4:27 left to snap a tie and lift a slumping Calgary to a win over St. Louis.

Coyotes 6, Kings 4: At Glendale, Ariz., Shane Doan returned to the Phoenix lineup and scored two goals during a win over Los Angeles.

Avalanche 3, Canucks 2: At Denver, Andrew Brunette scored two goals, including the tiebreaker in the third period that led Colorado past Vancouver.

Sharks 3, Penguins 2: At San Jose, Calif., Kyle McLaren had a goal and an assist and San Jose beat Pittsburgh, keeping rookie Evgeni Malkin from scoring in his seventh straight game to start his career.
